"On Trains" is comprised of field recordings and synth. I am fascinated by the nuances of the chimes on various subway trains and the Long Island Railroad. Each chime is a descending major third, but they differ slightly in length and tone. An important inspiration was Steve Reich, and how he uses recordings of non-musical sounds without significantly altering them, thus preserving their documentary quality. I conducted recordings on the 2, Q, 5, LIRR, and Amtrak trains, as well as at their stations. Out of these recordings, I looped rhythms, which then became the basis for different sections of the piece. Each section's tempo and meter fluctuates as determined by the loops. Finally, I added synth lines, which are informed by the chimes.
